Breakfast for the busy

Healthy breakfast. Bowl of yogurt with granola and berries

City living is busy, there’s no doubt about it. Many of us find ourselves awake at early hours and rushing out the door only to be greeted with a hefty commute to our office – and with all of this running around it can be difficult to take the time to nourish our bodies, especially in the midst of a chaotic morning.

Breakfast provides a handful of benefits. It kick starts your metabolism in order to burn more calories throughout the day, prevents diseases and gives you the energy needed in order to focus on work – and with the pressing presentation your manager requested be done by the end of the day, you know you need all of the energy you can get!

So, how can a person manage to squeeze in a healthy morning breakfast and city living? It’s easier than you may think, just follow these three simple steps:

Preparation. Believe it or not, breakfast starts in the evening but it will only take a few minutes to ensure you have a healthy start the following morning. Carbohydrates are best consumed in the morning because they provide your body with sustainable energy, keep this in mind when prepping your easy breakfast.

Try recipes that include your favourite fruits. Whether you keep it as simple as cutting up fruit to make a small fruit bowl or try popular overnight oatmeal recipes in a mason jar. If you want to skip the fruit, set out a healthy grain bread next to your toaster and take one minute to slice an avocado and season with salt and pepper, which will make for a quick toast topped with healthy fats in the morning. If you really want to treat yourself, pull out the blender and create a masterpiece smoothie bowl full of fruity-goodness, proteins and super foods to place in the refrigerator overnight.

Make it a routine. The most important detail is to maintain your food prep as part of your evening routine, otherwise you will find yourself succumbing to the fast food drive-thru window or with a grumbling stomach and low blood sugar in the morning. Keep your breakfast prep simple and fun by playing around with the recipes. See what flavours you like, try new fruits, incorporate chia seeds, Greek yogurts – and if you feel uninspired check out Pinterest for endless breakfast ideas.

Back up. Even with a founded routine, anyone can fall behind but that doesn’t mean you should totally suffer with a black coffee diet that morning. Keep a few bananas, instant oatmeal packs and (preferably homemade) protein granola bars at your office.
